Linnea Solberg loved anything that sprouted, stretched, or bloomed in the dirt. She hummed a bouncy, improvised gardening tune, marching in scuffed plum-purple rubber ankle boots. She wore a sage-green cotton smock apron embroidered with tiny wild strawberries, a cornflower-blue waffle-knit long-sleeve shirt, ochre yellow cropped trousers, and mismatched knitted ankle socks—one heather grey, one coral pink. Trot-trotting behind was Tariq, her timid but loyal prickly companion.

Tariq wore a forest-moss green knitted cowl collar fastened with a polished acorn-cap toggle button, and a diagonal chestnut-brown suede miniature messenger pouch. He communicated in soft chirps and cautious snuffles. Tariq constantly worried about getting snagged or tangled, but Linnea only saw botanical treasures. “Today is the day, Tariq!” Linnea declared in a breathless burst. “We have to find the giant Common Teasel before the sun dries it!”

“The books call it *Dipsacus fullonum*. Its leaves join together around the stem to make a tiny rainwater pool called Venus’ Basin! A secret drinking cup for nature!” But the Teasel only grew in the Spiky Scrub. Linnea was fiercely curious, but always rushed, examining foliage too closely. Spotting a purple flower, she dove in. *Snag!* A bramble hooked her coral-pink sock. Tariq wiggled his expressive nose anxiously.

“Just a little poke,” Linnea said, yanking her ankle free. “If we want to see the dew in the Venus’ Basin, we just need to move faster to break through!” Linnea decided speed was the answer. She grabbed a sturdy fallen branch to bat the prickly vines away. “Onward, Tariq! Charge!” she shouted, swinging her stick like an explorer’s machete to boldly clear their path toward the towering teasel stems.

But the Spiky Scrub fought back. The branch snapped with a loud *CRACK*, and a thick, thorny briar whipped forward, hooking her plum-purple boot so tightly she tripped. Tariq let out a soft, nervous chirp. He patted her knee, gesturing with a cautious paw toward a slower, winding path around the thorns. “No time for the long way!” Linnea puffed, brushing dirt from her ochre yellow trousers. “Minor snag!”

Linnea formed a second, highly scientific plan. “If we can’t go through them, we will go *under* them!” She dropped to her hands and knees, squirming into the dry, scratchy brush. She dragged a reluctant Tariq along by his chestnut-brown pouch strap. “We’ll be sneaky,” she whispered, eyes wide with excitement. “Like caterpillars! The prickles won’t even know we are down here.” Tariq snuffled. He knew what lived down there.

Suddenly, Linnea felt a sharp tug on her head. She had crawled straight into a patch of dry burdock. A cluster of hooked burrs embedded themselves tightly in her hair. “Ouch, ouch!” she winced, trying to pull them out, which only tangled them worse. Tariq climbed onto a rock. With meticulous care, his tiny paws helped loosen the burrs. He gave a gentle, warning squeak. “Right,” she sighed. “Too spiky.”

They finally reached the center of the patch. Towering above them was the magnificent Teasel plant. Linnea could see the joined leaves forming the famous Venus’ Basin, sparkling with trapped morning dew. “We made it!” she cheered in a breathless burst. Forgetting her recent scratches, Linnea stretched as high as she could on her tiptoes. She reached right over a massive cluster of stiff, spiny teasel-bracts to pull the stem.

*RIP!* The sharp teasel-cone caught the fabric of her strawberry-embroidered smock. Linnea yanked back, lost her balance, and tumbled into the dirt. The morning sun was rising high, quickly drying up the dew. Her smock was torn, her hair was a messy nest of burrs, and her arms stung. Her rushing had failed. Tears pricked her eyes as she stared at the impossible fortress of thorns. “I can’t reach it.”

Tariq nudged her elbow. He didn’t rush, yet he showed surprising grit. He took a slow, deliberate step forward into the thicket. He looked closely at a thorny stem, found a smooth gap between the spikes, and slipped past it perfectly. He turned and chirped softly, showing her how a prickly creature navigates a prickly world. Linnea wiped her eyes, having an epiphany. “You don’t fight prickles, Tariq. You respect them.”

Taking a deep, grounding breath, Linnea began to hum a slow, calming tune. She stood up and approached the towering Teasel again, but this time, her eyes were sharp and focused. She moved deliberately, watching exactly where she placed her scuffed boots. Instead of grabbing blindly, she used her fingertips gently, parting the stalks only by their smooth green gaps. Navigating the spines with patience, they reached the giant stem.

Linnea peered perfectly into the Venus’ Basin. The leaf-cup was brimming with glittering rainwater, and a tiny, thirsty honeybee was resting on the edge, taking a sweet morning drink. It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Linnea smiled, gently petting Tariq’s soft cowl. She learned that rushing only gets you stuck, and sometimes the most wonderful discoveries simply require the most careful steps. Tariq chirped in happy agreement.
