Teaching your child to read can feel like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. The most effective, evidence-based method for teaching early literacy is Phonics.

But what exactly is phonics, and how can you teach it at home without a teaching degree?

What is Phonics?

Phonics is the method of teaching children to read by linking sounds (phonemes) to the symbols that represent them (graphemes or letters). Instead of memorizing whole words, children learn the sounds that letters make and how to blend them together.

Step 1: Start with Letter Sounds, Not Names

When introducing the alphabet, focus on the sound the letter makes rather than its name. For example, teach that the letter "M" makes a "mmmm" sound, rather than just saying "This is an em."

Knowing the names of the letters is helpful, but knowing their sounds is what actually unlocks reading.

Step 2: Play Sound Games

You don't need flashcards to teach phonics. Make it a game!

• I Spy: "I spy with my little eye, something that starts with the ssss sound." (Snake, sock, sun).
• Rhyming: Rhyming helps children hear the patterns in words. Read rhyming picture books and pause to let them guess the rhyming word.

Step 3: Blend Sounds Together

Once your child knows a few consonant sounds and short vowel sounds, you can start blending them to make simple CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words.

• c - a - t = cat
• d - o - g = dog

Stretch the sounds out slowly, and then say them quickly.

Step 4: Use Read-Along Storybooks

Following along with a narrator is one of the best ways to reinforce phonics. When a child hears the word spoken clearly while simultaneously seeing the word on the page, their brain forms a strong connection.
